Chapter 1352: Waiting For The Rabbit
As she listened to the Chief's questions, Xu Rong had already formed some conjectures in her mind. The clues gradually connected, and she blurted out her thoughts on the spot.
"Chief."
"Just as you said, these spirits died in extremely gruesome ways. They were definitely finished off by someone, as if in an act of revenge. The entity responsible must be incredibly powerful, far beyond our ability to easily track down."
"However, I've also noticed a common thread!"
The Chief's eyes showed appreciation, and he nodded expectantly.
"Oh?"
"What common thread have you discovered? Tell me!"
Xu Rong nodded with increasing certainty, her tone growing steadier.
"In the incidents where spirits were massacred on a large scale, as well as the previous beast tide incident, they all occurred outside the city and at night. The timing and location are consistent, without any variation. We can consider these two factors as key elements to narrow down our search!"
Li Weiwei listened, somewhat confused.
The Chief, however, smiled even more broadly, adjusted his glasses, and nodded in agreement.
"Hmm, not bad."
"As long as we have people monitoring the movements outside the city, we might be able to uncover the traces of this terrifying entity. This is indeed a feasible approach."
"Quickly check if there are any other signs of spirit activity around Pingjiang City."
Xu Rong immediately sent out inquiries and soon responded with excitement.
"Chief, it's been confirmed. There were traces of a large number of spirits near the Qing River in the northern part of the city. That area is the only place where no corpses have been found so far. It must be the next target of that terrifying entity!"
Hearing this, Li Weiwei finally understood.
"Oh!"
"I get it now! The Chief means that by following the previous patterns, we should go to the next location and wait for the rabbit. That way, we can figure out what kind of terrifying entity is behind all this!"
The Chief smiled faintly.
Xu Rong decisively spoke up, her tone light yet determined.
"Chief."
"This time, I will personally go to the Qing River in the north. I'll hide nearby and keep a close watch. Maybe I can finally uncover what kind of entity is behind all this!"
Seeing her spirited and resolute request, the Chief solemnly nodded.
"Hmm, be careful in everything."
If it were anyone else, even if they were using technology to monitor from a distance, he would never agree to such a dangerous task. But Xu Rong was the most capable captain. She should be able to protect herself, and given the recent string of failures, this prodigy had been holding back her frustration. No matter what, she needed to achieve something significant.
Both emotionally and logically.
Xu Rong was the perfect candidate for this mission.
The Chief had already seen through everything. Knowing how to use people effectively was the greatest wisdom.
Seeing the captain entrusted with such an important task, Li Weiwei also felt a mix of nervousness and anticipation. She firmly promised to support the captain and cheer her on.
"Captain, be careful in everything."
"I'll be waiting for your good news. Don't worry about anything else. That strange man—I'll definitely keep a close eye on him!"
The group exchanged smiles, their eyes filled with determination.
The convoy sped off, heading straight for the dimly lit streets of Pingjiang City.
The next evening.
In an old residential area, Li Weiwei, dressed in a trench coat, hid under a tree, meticulously monitoring every movement in the apartment building. Her eyes were focused, never relaxing for a moment.
This time.
She was fully prepared, determined to uncover the true face of that despicable fraud, Wu Tao. As a member of the prestigious Demon Hunting Department, she couldn't afford to be fooled again, no matter what!
As a clerical intelligence officer, she wasn't particularly skilled in combat, but she was confident in her surveillance and tracking abilities. Plus, with the aid of technology, how could there be any mistakes?
Even if the target was a phantom spirit or even a powerful spirit hunter, she was confident she could monitor every move. Even if she had to go without food or water for an entire day, she would keep a close watch on this guy!
Meanwhile.
As night gradually fell.
On the high walls north of the city, Xu Rong nervously held her binoculars, closely watching the Qing River.
Although she was determined, due to the Chief's orders for safety reasons, she could only monitor the Qing River from a distance on the city walls. This far-off observation didn't align with Xu Rong's original intentions, but there was nothing she could do.
Even though a few team members had been sent to assist with the surveillance, setting up observation points along the several-mile-long city walls, Xu Rong's face still showed signs of worry. She kept her eyes fixed on the distant Qing River, not daring to relax for a moment.
However, human energy is ultimately limited.
After several hours of intense focus, even someone as capable as Xu Rong began to feel fatigued, especially when concentrating on a single spot.
Suddenly.
She felt her eyelids growing heavier, and a slight dizziness washed over her.
But just as she put down the binoculars to blink, the walkie-talkie at her waist suddenly crackled with an urgent report!
"Captain!"
"Captain, look! There's movement by the Qing River!"
Hearing this, Xu Rong quickly grabbed her binoculars.
Through the magnified view, she saw a figure darting across the Qing River. A burst of blood mist exploded under the moonlight, and within moments, the spirits that had appeared were slaughtered like cattle!
It was horrifying...
Even from a distance, the scene was utterly terrifying!
Despite her extensive experience, Xu Rong couldn't help but gulp in fear. But her pride and sense of duty surged within her, overcoming the fear, and she continued to watch intently.
Unfortunately.
The distance was too great, and the moonlight was dim.
No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't make out the true appearance of the figure rapidly moving through the area. As the spirits were nearly wiped out, it seemed the figure was about to leave!
What should she do?
Continuing to watch from afar would yield no results. This rare opportunity was about to slip away!
The more she watched, the more anxious she became.
Xu Rong didn't hesitate. She decisively leaped down from the city wall.
This shocked the other team members!
Not far ahead was the terrifying entity that had slaughtered the spirits. Approaching so recklessly was far too dangerous!
After all, even though this person had killed the spirits, it was impossible to tell if they were friend or foe.
The team members exchanged determined glances and also jumped down from the wall to stop her.
A few seconds of劝说 and阻拦 ensued.
Xu Rong was decisive and efficient, and her usual authority was deeply ingrained in the team. The members couldn't stop her, but they wasted precious time.
By the time she finally sprinted closer.
The Qing River was already littered with corpses, the same gruesome aftermath of a finishing blow, leaving everyone's hearts racing!
Xu Rong, however, grew even more frustrated, clenching her teeth and stomping her foot in frustration!
"Damn it!"
"I was too late! I didn't even get a clear look at what kind of creature did this!"
Hearing her words, the team members bowed their heads in guilt.
Xu Rong, however, didn't pay them any mind. She quickly raised her head, scanning the area with her binoculars, desperately searching for any trace of the terrifying entity under the moonlight.
Faced with her relentless determination, the team members felt even more regretful and ashamed.
Fortunately, persistence pays off.
Even though the terrifying entity was incredibly elusive, Xu Rong eventually spotted it.
On the distant horizon, bathed in moonlight...
A figure steadily walked away, its silhouette eerily highlighted by the serene moonlight. After the night's massacre, anyone who saw this scene would feel a chill in their hearts.
Without a doubt, that was the perpetrator!
But as Xu Rong eagerly locked onto the target.
The figure appeared utterly ordinary, like the back of a human man!
Instantly.
Xu Rong's heart skipped a beat, filled with disbelief.
She quickly adjusted her binoculars for a closer look. It was indeed a man, wearing slippers and shorts, strolling leisurely as if nothing had happened. Even from just the outline, the figure looked increasingly familiar.
Suddenly.
Xu Rong's clear eyes trembled, and she lowered the binoculars in shock.
"It's him?!"
