Chapter 1331: The Promise

2 views 13.03.2025

Several days passed.

After the incident where the old clan leader visited the school, the children became even more diligent and serious in their studies. Everyone was filled with a fervent desire to improve, and even the parents who occasionally came to pick up their children wore joyful expressions.

With such a positive learning atmosphere, Yi Feng found himself enjoying a leisurely and carefree life. He no longer needed to constantly lecture the children, and his days became smoother and more relaxed.

As dusk fell and it was time to dismiss the students, Yi Feng responded to their farewells with a warm smile, feeling a sense of accomplishment.

At the very least, he was living comfortably here, and by teaching and nurturing the children, he wasn’t wasting his time. It was far better than the nonsensical idea of seeking death.

He had thoroughly seen through those troubling thoughts.

Now, he was content with his peaceful life.

Returning to his courtyard, he found the kitchen stocked with food and drinks, and new clothes placed in his room. These were gifts from the townsfolk, delivered by Miss Wei. With no worries about food or clothing, he almost felt like he could open a shop. It was truly a happy problem.

It had to be said, the people here were incredibly kind-hearted.

All he had done was teach them to read and write, nothing extraordinary, yet they were so grateful. Miss Wei came every day with gifts, her enthusiasm almost overwhelming.

If it weren’t for the fact that many people greeted him warmly, Yi Feng might have started to wonder if the young lady had feelings for him, using the excuse of delivering gifts on behalf of the townsfolk.

Strolling leisurely in the courtyard, Yi Feng felt completely at ease. He had grown accustomed to this carefree life, but staying at the school every day wasn’t a long-term solution.

For one, aside from teaching and dealing with mischievous children, there wasn’t much else to do, which made life a bit monotonous. Secondly, he had been eating so much of the wild game and fruits sent by the townsfolk that he was starting to gain weight.

Feeling somewhat bored, Yi Feng raised his eyes to the green mountains behind the house.

The lush forest was alive with the chirping of birds.

The beautiful scenery bathed in the sunset resembled a picturesque landscape painting, stirring his interest and filling him with a sense of longing.

“It’s been a while since I last went hunting. Maybe I should take a walk in the mountains. Perhaps the game I catch myself will taste even better…”

As this thought crossed his mind, Yi Feng felt a surge of motivation.

In this simple town, where everyone lived in close-knit communities, there was no need to worry about theft or danger. Leaving doors unlocked at night and finding lost items returned was the norm.

He walked straight out of the gate, turning right with ease, heading toward the green mountains behind the school.

However, before he could pass the earthen wall outside the school, he ran into Wei Xiaowei.

She was wearing a new-looking green dress, simple yet elegant. Her long black hair seemed carefully styled, and though she wore little makeup, she looked even more charming than usual.

Seeing her doing so well, Yi Feng greeted her with a smile.

“Miss Wei, have you hunted another demon beast?”

Wei Xiaowei nodded slightly, her face tinged with a blush.

“Greetings, Master Yi.”

“Yesterday, we did catch a demon beast and exchanged it for a good amount of silver. The proceeds are enough to last us several months. We heard that you’re planning to train with the old clan leader, so everyone agreed to give you some of the beast meat.”

As she spoke, the young girl handed over a lotus leaf-wrapped package, her eyes avoiding direct contact.

Touched by their generosity, Yi Feng nodded gratefully.

He knew how hard life was for these people and immediately declined with a more serious tone.

“Miss Wei, there’s no need to be so polite.”

“These past few days, everyone has been sending so much food and clothing. I can’t possibly use it all. This beast meat is too valuable, and I really can’t accept it. I appreciate the kindness, but please, don’t do this anymore.”

Hearing his firm words, Wei Xiaowei bit her lip lightly for a moment before reluctantly giving up.

She withdrew the lotus-wrapped meat and then continued with concern.

“Master Yi.”

“It’s almost dark. Why are you out here alone? Are you going to the market to buy some food? If you don’t mind, why not come to my house for dinner?”

Faced with her kind invitation, Yi Feng honestly shared his thoughts.

“Thank you for your kindness, Miss Wei, but it’s not about food.”

“I just saw how beautiful the mountain looks and thought I’d take a stroll to enjoy the sunset and the scenery.”

However, as soon as he finished speaking, Wei Xiaowei’s expression changed dramatically.

“What?!”

“Master Yi, you must not go up the mountain recklessly!”

“The mountain may look beautiful, but it’s filled with demon beasts. If it weren’t for the protective array set up by the old clan leader at the base of the mountain, the beasts would have already overrun the town!”

“Going up there alone is far too dangerous. You could even lose your life!”

Yi Feng had heard warnings about life-threatening dangers far too many times.

In the past, when he wasn’t sure of his own strength, he might have been intrigued, thinking it could help him achieve his goal of seeking death. He might have even tried it.

But now, Yi Feng’s heart was at peace.

He had experienced too many disappointments.

So many that he had given up.

He smiled and replied in a calm tone.

“It’s alright. I’m just taking a casual walk and won’t go too far. Don’t worry.”

Wei Xiaowei frowned, still visibly uneasy.

After a moment of hesitation, she continued to persuade him.

“Master Yi, you absolutely cannot go up Qingmang Mountain alone!”

“If you really want to climb the mountain to enjoy the scenery, why not come with us tomorrow? I’ll be joining the hunting team to go up the mountain.”

“Since we’ve had quite a few successful hunts recently, we won’t be venturing too deep. We’ll just patrol the outer areas, so there’s no danger. It would be perfect for you to join us.”

“So, if you’re willing, I’ll wait for you at the base of the mountain tomorrow.”

“Otherwise, I absolutely cannot let you go up there alone.”

The young girl spoke with increasing seriousness, her expression growing stubborn, as if she was determined to stop him.

Faced with such concern, Yi Feng couldn’t help but smile faintly and finally relented.

“Alright.”

“Tomorrow at dusk, we’ll meet as agreed.”

Hearing this, Wei Xiaowei’s face lit up with a smile. She nodded in agreement, and as if suddenly remembering something, her earlier disappointment at failing to give him the gift vanished completely.

She ran off, her figure graceful under the sunset, waving and smiling like a blooming flower.

“Master Yi!”

“You must remember, tomorrow at dusk, we’ll meet as agreed!”
