Chapter 1231: Wheres The Danger
Although everyone had long been prepared, witnessing a teammate sacrifice themselves right before their eyes was a sorrow that no one could immediately shake off. Even the usually stern female captain remained silent for a long time.
Standing alone on the edge of a high-rise building, she gazed down at the increasingly dilapidated city, lost in thought.
It wasn’t until a young female team member approached, speaking in a tone of reverence, that she snapped out of it.
"Captain."
"All the wraiths have been eradicated in this operation. Our team lost one member, and another is severely injured."
The beautiful captain nodded slightly.
As she turned around, her face regained its usual resolute expression.
"Continue to stay vigilant. Not a single moment of relaxation is allowed. Once we’ve confirmed there are no more wraiths, report our progress to headquarters according to protocol. Arrange for the compensation of the fallen and the treatment of the injured!"
"Also."
"Starting today, a curfew will be enforced here. Wraiths appear at night, and no one is allowed to leave their homes without permission!"
The remaining team members immediately saluted and responded.
"Yes, Captain!"
The female team member behind her also took out a communication device, continuously transmitting photos from the scene.
Everything was proceeding in an orderly manner.
After experiencing multiple losses, the team had grown more mature, suppressing their personal emotions and prioritizing the protection of civilians above all else.
When they took off their uniforms, they were just themselves.
But when they donned these black outfits, they became the guardians of the city, the last line of defense protecting the countless homes and their lights. They would not retreat a single step!
However.
The situation seemed to be getting worse.
Tonight, another teammate had fallen, and they had only barely managed to maintain a semblance of peace.
What would tomorrow bring?
How much longer could they hold out?
A wave of anxiety washed over the beautiful captain as she stared out at the city’s nightscape, lost in thought.
Suddenly!
A figure caught her eye!
The captain’s eyes narrowed as she focused intently.
There was indeed a man, strolling down the long street. He was dressed casually, carrying two bags in his hands, looking completely carefree and relaxed.
The captain frowned deeply and immediately sprang into action!
The female team member, unaware of what was happening, quickly followed.
By the time the two reached the street.
The young man hadn’t gone far. He seemed like an ordinary citizen, his lazy pace only adding to their frustration.
The captain strode forward and called out to him.
"Hey."
The young man turned around, looking confused. His appearance was utterly ordinary.
"What’s up?"
This response.
The female team member’s temper nearly flared up!
What’s up?!
We’re out here risking our lives to protect civilians, and you’re just wandering around at night, not even caring about your own safety? Do you have any respect for the soldiers who’ve died?!
Compared to her fiery temper, the captain remained much calmer.
She took a deep breath and spoke with a serious tone.
"It’s too dangerous at night. A curfew will be enforced soon. You really shouldn’t be out alone at this hour, understand?"
Wu Tao was even more confused.
He hadn’t felt even the slightest hint of danger, not even a one-in-a-million chance. He racked his brain, trying to figure out what he might have missed.
"Where’s the danger?"
"I don’t feel anything…"
When he heard that he couldn’t go out, Wu Tao’s expression turned resolute.
"Not going out isn’t an option."
"If I don’t go out to buy things, that’s when it’ll be dangerous!"
He quickly glanced at the bags in his hands, relieved to see the talismans were still intact.
His nonsensical words and actions made the two women’s hearts sink.
Even the captain couldn’t help but frown.
This guy was really being unreasonable. She had come out to warn him, and it had no effect at all. He clearly had some serious cognitive issues and might end up in trouble.
But wearing the black uniform, the captain couldn’t just ignore him. She couldn’t let a civilian die on the streets.
After a moment of hesitation, she asked in a restrained tone.
"Sir, where do you live?"
"If there’s nothing urgent, we can escort you home."
Wu Tao was taken aback. Were people really this nice nowadays?
Had the world become so kind?
He gave them a once-over.
Seeing the two women exuding an air of righteousness and no sense of danger, he nodded in agreement.
"Sure."
He then gestured with his chin in a direction.
"My place is just up ahead. Thanks."
The two women nodded and began accompanying Wu Tao home.
At first.
They remained highly alert, constantly scanning their surroundings.
But seeing Wu Tao’s carefree demeanor, the female team member couldn’t help but mutter to herself.
How thick-skinned do you have to be to wander around at night without a care in the world, risking your life like it’s nothing?
What a character.
The more she looked at his lazy demeanor, the more she felt like she was witnessing something extraordinary.
She quietly leaned closer to the captain.
"Boss, do you think this guy might have something wrong with his head? Does he not understand what death is?"
The captain shot her a glare but didn’t respond.
The female team member awkwardly stuck out her tongue and whispered even softer.
"Uh…"
"I don’t think he’s mentally challenged."
"But today’s the night of the blood moon. Everyone was notified about this in advance. Anyone with half a brain knows to stay indoors. How can he still be out wandering? Isn’t he afraid of dying?"
Perhaps annoyed by the questions.
The captain glared at her and coldly replied.
"Don’t overthink it. Since we’ve encountered him, we’ll just escort him home. We’ve done our duty."
The female team member nodded in admiration.
"Yes, Boss!"
Indeed.
As the captain said, whenever they encountered someone, they had to fulfill their duty to protect civilians. The greater their abilities, the greater their responsibilities. This was the sense of duty that a cultivator should have!
Perhaps it was this very spirit that allowed the captain to achieve perfection, never failing a single mission to this day!
Just as the female team member was lost in admiration.
Suddenly!
Several figures flashed across the rooftops on either side!
Even if it was just for a brief moment, it didn’t escape the notice of these special individuals!
The captain quietly stopped in her tracks.
The female team member also tensed up, looking around nervously!
When she saw what was happening, her face turned pale!
These wraiths weren’t like the usual ethereal ones. Instead, they were tainted with a distinct blood-red hue!
This unusual color signified slaughter.
It meant these wraiths had taken the lives of civilians, at least ten or more, to exhibit such an anomaly. These wraiths were not only vicious but also far more powerful!
Almost the moment they recognized the wraiths’ eyes.
The captain and her team member stood back-to-back, their expressions grave!
"Find a corner to hide in."
The captain shouted to Wu Tao.
Facing such wraiths, she had no choice but to take them seriously.
She slowly drew the sword from her waist, her eyes filled with a murderous aura!
The female team member was also on high alert. Even before engaging in combat, cold sweat was already soaking her gloves!
The next moment.
A murderous aura erupted as they unleashed their full power, diving into the battle!
Although there were only two of them, the captain’s extraordinary combat prowess and their seamless coordination allowed them to hold their ground against four or five blood-red wraiths!
The fierce battle lasted several minutes, leaving the long street in complete disarray!
Fortunately, they managed to barely eliminate the blood-red wraiths!
The two of them let out a sigh of relief, about to call Wu Tao to continue on their way, only to find that the young man was nowhere to be seen.
Their expressions changed, and without resting, they sprinted forward, gasping for breath as they searched along the street. But they found no trace of the young man.
As dawn approached, they reluctantly gave up.
"Captain, he’s probably…"
